Vision problems in older age may be linked
to shorter life expectancy.
Researchers from Purdue University in the U.S. found that
adults whose vision was reduced by one letter (optotype) per
time had a 16% increase in risk of death over an 8-year period. The team
surveyed 2250 patients between 65 and 84 years old as part of the clinic
study Salisbury.
Also, the effect of reduced vision on daily activities
like shopping, cooking or ‘picking up a phone’ had the most
significant effect on mortality risk.
Assistant Professor Sharon Crist said: “When people couldn’t
now to succeed with such activities due to reduced vision,
Then life expectancy was decreasing.” According to the professor,
Results highlight the value of preventing vision problems for
older individuals. (published by JAMA Ophthalmology)
