A child’s level of maturity, not age, is the first
success factor for optometrists when applying contact lenses for children.
A total of 748 optometrists took part in the research of the British College of Optometrists and Johnson & Johnson.
Other factors taken into account during the application were motivation to wear, interest in contact lenses, hygiene, and ability to properly care for their lenses.
According to research, eyeglasses remain the first choice for vision correction in children and adolescents, but the percentage of optometrists who successfully apply contact lenses at young ages is increasing. Over 76% of optometrists recommend contact lenses as PART of vision correction for ages between 10 and 12. 44% recommend lenses as the MAIN way of correction until the age of 15 and only 1% recommend glasses after the age of 15.
